during the earliest years of tea drinking are now the models of similar designs from the China of Deng Xiaoping.

Novelty teapots are a comparatively new field for collectors, although examples have been included
in collections of ceramics for many years there are some famous ones in the Victoria & Albert Museum and
the British Museum. Stoneware teapots in imaginative shapes were made five centuries ago in China and
when china first came to Europe in the mid 1600s the novelty teapot came too.
These were among the first articles made by the early porcelain manufactures in Germany and Britain,
and some classic Chinese designs, such as the fruit and animal teapots, have always been in production
somewhere in Europe ever since.
In the Victorian age, novelty teapots, adapted to contemporary tastes, sold by the thousand with the china figures
and Toby jugs, and established their own classic themes of cottages, Dickens’s characters and endearing animals.
The twentieth century added its own repertoire of contemporary images, the motor car, the aeroplane and
later the space ship. While the variety of novelty pots grew, the survivors of previous generations dwindled,
adding the spice of rarity to collecting.
