Description This is an authentic silver medal of merit awarded by the Bureau of Rites & Customs (禮俗司) under the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the late Qing Dynasty (Guangxu to Xuantong reigns, ca. 19001915).
The Bureau of Rites & Customs was responsible for ceremonies, rituals, and court events. This medal was conferred upon individuals who rendered distinguished service in these areas. It represents a transitional decoration, combining traditional Chinese artistic design with the influence of Western-style medal systems that were beginning to be introduced at the time.
Obverse: decorated with cloisonn enamel, inscribed with the character “褒章” (Medal of Merit) in the center.
Reverse: officially marked with the inscription “務部禮俗司印” (Seal of the Bureau of Rites & Customs, Ministry of Internal Affairs).
Suspension: ornate openwork fitting with a purple ribbon (original).
