浮世絵や大漁旗、出産や節句の祝い旗など、日本国内で広く親しまれています。
1870年に旧日本陸軍の「陸軍御国旗」として制定され、後に旧日本海軍の軍艦旗にも採用されました。
自衛隊の自衛隊旗(連隊旗)と海上自衛隊の自衛艦旗として旭日旗の意匠が用いられています。これらは半世紀以上にわたり、
自衛艦や部隊の所在を示す旗として国際社会でも広く受け入れられています。
They are widely familiar throughout Japan, appearing in ukiyo-e prints, fishing flags,
and celebratory flags for births and seasonal festivals.
It was established in 1870 as the "Army Flag" of the former Imperial Japanese Army, and was later adopted
as the naval ensign of the former Imperial Japanese Navy.
The design of the Rising Sun Flag is used for the Self-Defense Forces' regimental flags
and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's naval ensign.
For over half a century, these flags have been widely accepted in the international community
as indicators of the location of Self-Defense Force ships and units.
