The first two discs of this 3-CD box set are devoted to 36 of the group's most popular songs--"The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Up on Cripple Creek", and so on. All these songs appeared on the Band's original albums, and 23 of them appeared on 1989's compilation To Kingdom Come. The most interesting aspect of Across the Great Divide is the third disc, which is subtitled "Rarities". Some aren't as rare as others, but there are two obscure items credited to Levon Helm & the Hawks, a previously unreleased 1967 demo of "Orange Juice Blues", plus five previously unreleased live performances. Those eight true rarities are wonderful, but they leave the listener hungering for more. --Geoffrey Himes
