This is Sony's flagship CDP-777ESA.
It's a model that most purely inherits and perfects the philosophy of the so-called Sony R1, before Sony transitioned to the somewhat awkward design of inserting the mechanical base into the tray.
I don't think much explanation is needed, but I think it has a refined sound that is lacking in recent DACs. The exterior is in excellent condition as shown in the photos. It's a one-owner item from my grandfather.
Digital compression was largely perfected during the peak of PCM recording. This technology, directly used when Mr. Nakajima created the CD standard, incorporates 45-bit oversampling technology, and Sony was the first to use a method that adds a pseudo-random signal to the signal before D/A conversion, without degrading the signal itself.
Around this time, Onkyo and Kenwood had already changed their sampling rates, and their sound began to deteriorate. The sound is very close to Philips and Studer, unified in terms of resolution, richness of sound, and early analog sound quality.
I use the bird sounds in Cornelius's "Too Pure" to distinguish the sound quality of CDs, but with low-resolution CDs, the bird sounds get buried.
Furthermore, even among early CD players, those with low resolution can't reproduce this song properly.
Of course, even with recent DACs, Chinese products and FX/AZLA Smart DAC A150 (384kHz/32bit compatible) can't reproduce the attack and resonance of the bird sounds, which last less than 0.2 seconds, based on the numbers alone. However, the 777ESJ and x77es reproduce them perfectly.
The attack is almost the same as the LUXMAN D-07X, and in fact, the 777 is smoother.
For older recordings such as DENON Classic 100, the 777 produces a better overall sound.
While this kind of initial sound is common in classical music, CD development at the time focused on creating a cohesive soundscape using extreme instruments like cellos, jazz trumpets, bird sounds, and noises—essentially movie soundscapes. This involved a vastly different development process compared to recent developments that rely solely on response speed for program correction.
Among the early classic CD players from Studer, Philips, Marantz, and Luxman, only Sony and Philips truly demonstrate musicality; Luxman and Marantz seem to be tuned specifically for classical music.
I had it overhauled two years ago at A&P, costing just under 50,000 yen.
This included greasing, belt replacement, and circuit inspection. Grease was applied to the heat dissipation components, and the famous sapphire shaft was cleaned.
They were particularly meticulous in checking the vibration of the G-base, removing old grease from the pickup rails, and applying new silicone grease. Naturally, the tray opening/closing, reading, and random playback speeds are all extremely smooth.
It comes with a wireless remote control, the RM-DX5000. I expect it to function smoothly for some time. This is an old item, so please understand that it is sold as-is (no returns, no refunds). Shipping will be via Yu-Pack (cash on delivery).
